Failure of Soviet Intelligence in Operation Barbarossa Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

On June 22 1941, World War II entered its bloodiest and most destructive chapter as Nazi Germany enacted “Operation Barbarossa” the invasion of the Soviet Union. Attacking along a front that stretched from the Baltic to the Black Sea, by autumn 1941 the Wermacht had penetrated hundreds of kilometers into Soviet territory and had killed or captured over three million Soviet soldiers. Although it took take several months for the Red Army to properly mobilize for battle, the German advance was stopped and eventually turned back. However, the ease with which the Wermacht initially overcame Soviet defenses exposed how ill prepared the Soviet Union was for an invasion. With its vast resources and immense army, this begs the question of why was the Soviet Union so poorly prepared for the German invasion of 1941? With masses of German troops gathering on the Soviet border and the largest intelligence network in the world, why was Stalin unable to anticipate Operation Barbarossa?
