Setting Analysis of “A Rose for Emily” Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

“A Rose for Emily” is a story about a woman named Emily Grierson who was a legend and an icon for what the small Mississippi town of Jefferson used to stand for, and her husband, who was a big man from the north, named Homer Barron, who left Emily, which left her in distress and led her to living a sheltered life for the rest of her time on Earth. In doing so, she has the whole town spying on her trying to see what she is doing in her home. William Faulkner decided to have this story take place in a small, close-knit town in Mississippi called Jefferson to help the reader understand the character’s values, ideas, morals, and beliefs, and to give background information so the reader can better understand the story. With the people of Jefferson and their southern pride, not accepting Yankees or blacks, and the size of the town and the close community, the small southern town of Jefferson is the perfect setting for the story to take place. Faulkner begins the story with, “When Miss Emily Grierson died, our whole town went to her funeral: the men through a sort of respectful affect......
