Although Esperanza and Ana both feel selfish for seeking to achieve their own goals they do not betray their families by working towards a better life. I instead, they will improve the live of those who are closet to them by improving themselves. Esperanza and Ana felt hat by following the examples the women of their Mexican culture have shown, is not the right path they want to pursue. In fact Esperanza’s mother has revealed that she regrets dropping out of school to get married at a young age. Likewise, Ana’s mother, Carmencita, does not consider her daughter Estela to be a successful woman (even though she runs her own business) because she does not have a husband. At the same time, women on Mango Street all succeed in their dreams of getting married, to only get their hopes up by taking on the role of damsel’s in distress. To begin with Esperanza’s mother regrets getting married so quickly and not getting an education. Her mother tells her, “Esperanza, you go to school. Study hard.” (Cisneros, 91).
