Discuss the main market forces that explain the existence of cities.
Cities have existed for many hundreds of years. There are many different shapes and sizes of cities, and even different causes and uses for them. This essay is going to focus on why cities exist, and in particular why large cities come to be. I am purposely going to omit discussion on pre-trade and pre-industry cities that were developed for defense and safety reasons in ancient times. Discussion will be focused upon relatively modern cities that were developed throughout the continuing age of trade and industry. The aims of this essay are to understand the major market forces that create the need for cities, and specifically which of these forces transform normal cities into large diverse cities (i.e. New York, or London).
