According to Rose del Castillo Gilbaut in her article Americanization Is Tough On Macho there are fundamental differences in the interpretation of the word macho between Hispanics and the Americans. The Hispanic macho is mainly viewed as someone who has sense of responsibility, who values hard work, someone who is in charge of the family, as well who shows his strength trough simply being quiet. For Americans, macho represents a man, who is irresponsible, lazy and violent, who doesnt respect women as well is capable of causing physical pain. The Hispanic meaning of macho gives value to a man, in contrary to Americans where it does the opposite. Being a good father constitutes one of the most important characteristics of being macho for Hispanics, the Americans think that being a good father takes away the masculinity.
