Medicines and Treatments Provided by the Roman Army Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
Credit for great medical discoveries which led to the increase in life expectancy and survival rates among the brave soldiers in Ancient Rome can be given to historians and philosophers who went to great lengths to learn and record their remedies. Centuries ago, in a time of plague and bloodshed, there were medics and surgeons to aide in the healing of soldiers in the Roman Army, each with enough knowledge in the use of tools and techniques to provide proper care, many of which are similar to what is used today.
The Roman Army, composed of professional soldiers from all over the empire, was formed to defend Rome after it was founded around 753BC. This army had no medically experienced personnel so the wounds and illnesses of soldiers were treated amongst themselves while having little or no knowledge of what they were doing. Because of the high levels of injury, it was Emperor Augustus who formed the Medical Military Corps.
