An Occurence at Owl Creek Bridge Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge is the story of a man who is sentenced to death by hanging at the Owl Creek Bridge. The story centers on Peyton Farquhar, a southern planter who, while not a Confederate Soldier, is about to be hanged by the Union Army for attempting to destroy the railroad bridge at Owl Creek. As Farquhar stands on the bridge with a noose around his neck, Bierce leads the reader to believe that the rope breaks and that Farquhar falls into the water below, only to escape to his farm, where he is reunited with his wife. It is revealed at the end of the story, however, that Farquhar has, in fact, been hanged and that these events took place in the seconds before his death. When describing the pains that Farquhar is enduring Bierce uses a lot of detail telling how it travels throughout his whole body affecting every part of him; “keen, poignant agonies seemed to shoot from his neck downward through every fiber of his body and limbs.” His use of syntax to compare the “light about him” with “a frightful roaring was in his ears, and all was cold and dark” portrays ......
