Depression is a widespread mood disorder that brings feelings of deep sadness and despair without a discernible cause and lasts for two weeks or more. Other symptoms include, feeling of worthlessness, hopelessness, loss of sleep, appetite and lack of energy. In the textbook, the author, Saul Kassin, states that having a negative explanatory style makes a person more susceptible to depression. In the article, Do Negative Cognitive Styles Confer Vulnerability to Depression, by Alloy, Abramson and Francis, states that negative cognitive styles do indeed confer vulnerability to depressive disorders and suicide. Even though some people are predisposed to depression, the way people interpret and understand different situations or events in their lives affects their vulnerability to depression too.
