The Night Thoreau Spent In Jail Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

When putting on a play it is a good idea to have technical support. In “The Night Thoreau Spent in Jail”, not a lot of attention is drawn to the set. Since the focus of the audience jumps from one area of action to another it calls for a very simple and stylized set. First off, two cots would be set up to represent the jail cell. Chairs and benches would be placed to coincide with the action at hand. The lighting plays a crucial part in this play. This will help to distinguish between the different places of action. At one point, it is explained that the characters are in a meadow and the playwrights include that the cyc is to be lit to appear as the sky with “sunlit clouds”. Numerous props are to be used to clarify the action but still most is left to imagination. For example, in act one an event occurs between Ellen and Henry where a simple box is used to represent a boat. Other props are used throughout this play but mostly the audiences’ imagination will fill in the blanks where props and other set dressings cannot.
