The Movies: American History on Film Beginning in the early 1900s, a new invention sparked the turn of the century and opened up a whole new function for historical documentation. The motion picture established a whole new outlet for American history and has been one of the only industries in which progression is constant. In The Movies: An American Idiom; Readings in the Social History of the American Motion Picture edited by Arthur F. McClure, the American approach to film is analyzed and admired in thirty-eight essays written by “journalists, critics, historians, sociologists, humorists, novelists, and other writers.” In the book, McClure focuses on the importance of many different facts about the American motion picture industry. He hopes to give the reader all necessary components to the history of the motion picture, which in turn should also show how important the movies are to American society.
