The film that we watched in class was a first-class documentary on World War I's 369th Infantry Regiment (originally the 15th New York Infantry), also known as the Harlem Hellfighters and the Rattlesnake Regiment. The 15th New York Infantry was authorized in 1913 and was not formed until 1916. Two hundred Negro residents in the city, who had previous military service, became the core for this new regiment. After the declaration of the war on April 6, 1917, the 15th New York Infantry was the first unit in the city to be recruited to war. They fought the racism of the Army during establishment from the earliest formation of the unit, through training (at a camp in Spartanburg, SC) and then they were shipped overseas to be posted in France, where they were initially given menial tasks such as stevedores and porters. After a couple months of laborer duty, the regiment was known as the 369th U.S. Infantry and was sent to serve with the French who had no prejudice against black soldiers fighting alongside whites.
