The Death Penalty Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The Death Penalty The death penalty is one of the most widely argued issues in the United States nowadays. It is easily argued much like abortion and many points can be risen by each side. In 1972, the courts felt that the death penalty was “harsh, freakish, and arbitrary.” (Forman v. Georgia, 408 U.S. 238) However, in July 1976, the courts changed their minds then stating, “the punishment of death doesn’t invariably violate the Constitution.” (Gregg v. Georgia, 428 U.S. 153) The death penalty then began in 1977, with more than three thousand people sentenced to death, and more than 180 executed. I feel that the death penalty is not fair and should not be allowed. It is childish in the lex talion terminology, it wastes so much time and money on decisions, and if a person is sentenced to death on a crime they did not commit, they have no second chance. Murder is defined as “the unlawful and malicious or predicated killing of the human being by another.” The terms “kill” and “execute” do not mean the same thing.
