Who was Che Guevara? The man has been so obscured by the legend that his actual deeds have been rendered obsolete. Che has become a social and commercial icon. His visage is on t-shirts, hats, patches, posters and even underwear. There are Che dolls, lighters and candy dispensers. He is a symbol of revolution; a term that has become vaguely synonymous with “cool”. Young Americans idolize Che the revolutionary--“He wanted to change things, man. He was a hero.”--without knowing what, exactly, he was trying to change and without realizing the contempt Che actually felt for the United States. Che was a Communist, an incendiary writer, a protégé of Fidel Castro, a guerrilla soldier and a poor government official. As a soldier, he was admired for his courage and feared for his ruthlessness. He helped to inspire the Cuban Revolution but was ignored in the Congo and murdered when he tried to motivate an uninspired Bolivia.
