In Franz Kafkas A Hunger Artist, Kafka suggests the idea that humans are unable to satisfy their desires, goals, and ambitions. The hunger artist in the story is searching for a form of nourishment, but is not being nourished at all. He is not being nourished in any way. The community that surrounds him has their own desires. They want to see the artist cheating. The onlookers assume that he is cheating because they cannot observe him every moment of the 40 day intervals. Existentialism in A Hunger Artist is shown through the philosophy dealing with man's aloneness in the universe. The hunger artist is a show to the people who come to watch his unique profession. They want to understand why he does what he does. They want to understand why he isolates himself from people and why he starves himself; in the end to his death.
