The countrys open market, high productivity, stability, reliable economy, central location and highly developed industrial base support the decision to operate in Switzerland. In, 2004 Switzerlands imports of U.S. products amounted to approximately USD 8.7 billion. Though, there are some challenges from the competition of the countries other major trading partners, such as Germany, France, Italy, and the United Kingdom. U.S. exporters need to enter the market quickly for risk of loosing their competitive edge. By entering the Swiss market, it paves the way to entering other European markets.
The dollar is continually depreciating against the Swiss franc due to 2005 geopolitical tensions. The rate is decreasing from SF1.49 in October 2002 to SF 1.31 in 2003 and to SF 1.28 in June 2005. The market become more unattractive for foreign investors when the Swiss National Bank lowered its interest rates to near zero in March 2002, to make borrowings cheaper.
