Thieu Nguyen Latin III Period 2 Research Topic : Penalties of Treason Greeks and Romans Treason, or traditio in Latin, is the general term for the offense of attempting by overt acts to overthrow the government of the state to which the offender owes allegiance or to kill or personally injure the sovereign. The law which allows penalty for treason is necessary in order to preserve the idea of a state and its existence. Most early civilizations created a consequence law of treason very early on in their history, including the ancient Romans and Greeks. The Law of Majestas, or Lex Maiestas, refers to any of the several ancient Roman laws throughout the Republic and Imperial time periods that had to do with crimes against the Roman people, emperor, state, or officials. In Roman law, the offenses that originally fell under the crime of treason were almost solely those committed in and during military service. The name "perduellio" is the name of the crime of treason in the older Roman law. Perduelles were "strictly public enemies who bore arms against the state, and traitors ......
