Heroic Journey of Huck and Holden Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The two great realistic novels, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, by Mark Twain, and The Catcher in the Rye, by J.D. Salinger have a lot in common. The only difference between the two books is that they were written in two different time periods separated by one hundred years. Otherwise, the characters of these two works seem to follow similar patterns. One, Huck Finn, makes his way along the Mississippi River with his runaway slave friend, Jim. The other, Holden Caulfield, traveled from Pencey Prep to New York City. Huck is escaping society¡¦s demands on him, and Holden needs to resolve his personal neuroses. These two novels can be compared using the Heroic Cycle with both literal and symbolic interpretations. The Heroic Cycle is name for a universal and archetypal situation. There are six parts that make up the cycle: the call to adventure, the threshold crossing, the road of trials, the supreme test, a flight or a flee, and finally a return.
