African Art Mrs. Day-Clark April 18, 2006 All in a Mask At the risk of promoting an inaccurate sense of Africa as a place of unified or monolithic artistic practice, the question of what, if anything, is distinctively African about African art (Visona pg.14 -15) African Art is utilitarian containing pieces that display communication, innovation, and the aesthetics of Africa. However, African Art stretches over a wide range of Africa and has a wide range of symbolic meaning. For that reason, I have decided to narrow my search to Western Africa where I will compare and contrast two ancestral mask, the Bundu helmet (Gola, Sande Association) from Sierra Leone and the Banda mask (Nalu or Baga people of Guinea) from Guinea. In the 19th century, the Bundu helmet mask of the Sande female society was originally founded in the jungles of Sierra Leone (Western Africa, bordering the North Atlantic Ocean, between Guinea and Liberia).
