Jewish boys prepare for Bar Mitzvah by going to have Hebrew lessons with the Rabbi. They do this because the following Shabbat after there 13th Birthday they will be called up in the synagogue to go to the bimah and read a sidra form the Torah Scrolls. Therefore they must be able to read and speak Hebrew he his lessons he will learn the Shema off by heart. They will also be taught how to wear the tefillin and the tallith for his Bar Mitzvah.
The ceremony, the passage of the day is read from the Sefer Torah. The boy will then be called up to the bimah to read a passage but sometimes he is asked to read from the prophets instead. The boy will then read out the passage in Hebrew, many of the boys friends and family will come to hear him. After the boy has recited the passage his father will then recite the baruch shepatarani, This is a brief statement in which he thanks G-d for having brought the boy to maturity and declares that the boy is now responsible for his own actions.
