“The Great Gatsby: A State of Immorality” Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

In F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel The Great Gatsby immorality is consistently practiced, portraying the iniquity of the America in the early 1900’s, as well as the “American Dream” and the means of obtaining it. The book was set in the 1920’s, a time of post-war prosperity along with low moral standards. Gatsby’s life defines the “American Dream”, and through this we uncover the true iniquity of this so called dream that every American lusts for. “The American Dream as presented by Gatsby is based on criminal action and immorality” (Trpak 4). As well as the book taking place in an immoral time period, it also derived from an immoral place. They left Middle America to leave behind the boring, respectable life, only to gain the fast paced, lustful life of the east (Trpak 1). The immorality’s roots are further traced to the islands known as East and West Egg. Another immoral place is hinted through its name as well as actions that take place there; it is referred to as the “Valley of Ashes.” East and West Egg are home to many parties, and the valley of ashes is a place of ......
