Hamlet is told by his father’s ghost that he must make amends for his death, by killing Claudius. Hamlet desperately wants to get his revenge, but he holds back because he lacks the ruthlessness to act straightaway. Because of this, he contemplates over the value of life, morals, emotions and contemplation itself. He is also too preoccupied with his contempt of his mother, and protecting his reputation. In act 1 scene 5, the ghost of King Hamlet tells Hamlet that he was murdered by his brother Claudius, who now claims his throne. To set the natural order back as it should be, and get revenge, Hamlet must kill Claudius. Hamlet promises that he will, and hates Claudius from this moment on. He is more loyal to his father than he is to anyone else in the play, and compares his father’s nobility and greatness to Claudius’ lack thereof. “(Claudius is) no more like my father than I to Hercules.” He also is very troubled by his mother’s choice to marry Claudius, calling it infidelity and even ‘incest’. This shows that he views his mother and Claudius’ relationship as disgusting ......
