Views and Values Practise Essay – A Doll’s House. Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Through Nora’s decision to leave Helmer, Ibsen asserts the importance of individualism. He sees social propriety and expectations as severe limitations on an individual’s ability to be true to him or herself. Ibsen criticises the harshness of the Victorian era, which dictates that women should have no social and economic freedom or education. Rather, their sole purpose in life is to entertain and care for their families. This belief is supported by Torvald, who complies with all masculine traditional views presented in the play, and therefore represents Victorian society. For example, he says when Nora is playing with the children, “This is no place for anyone but a mother.” Nora, throughout most of the play, accepts her role without hesitation and because of this, Ibsen positions the audience to sympathise with her, as we would a martyr. She flirts with Torvald and plays the part of the “little skylark”, amongst a plethora of other humiliating diminutives, which Ibsen uses to ridicule the childish behaviour in their supposedly grown-up marriage. Nora seems to be the epitom......
