Moneyball - The Changing of the Game of Baseball Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The book “Moneyball” by Michael Lewis may someday be viewed as revolutionary, as a spark that changed the way the game of baseball is played, and the way that its players are evaluated. In a sport that has existed for almost two hundred years, it seems ridiculous that a drastically new strategy could be used that would make for a disproportionate amount of success, but as Lewis lays out in very convincing fashion, the “sabermetricians”, most notably Billy Beane, the General Manager of the Oakland A’s, may in fact be on to something in terms of the best way to evaluate the value of baseball players and how they help a team win. There may be some statistics, as shown in the book, “Moneyball” that hold more weight than other statistics that fans, players, owners, and scouts have always held to be the most important. And since change is difficult in any culture, and baseball does have a unique culture, some of these statistics that have always been deemed important (and still are by most today) may in fact be outdated, according to Beane and other Sabermetricians.
