On Seeing England For the First Time Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

I would not recommend the essay, “On Seeing England for the First Time” by Jamaica Kincaid. As a young child myself, when I learned about England I was able to relate to those maps and images and what it must be like to live in England. What I didn’t like is how she persuaded you not to like England for any apparent reason. As I continued to read her story, I was able to relate with why she became angry and frustrated. Kincaid, as a native of the Antigua, could not relate to everything being English. Kincaid grew up in Antigua, a small island in the Caribbean, a place where English colonization had taken place long before she was even born. She is taught all her life about England, where every aspect of daily life revolved around behaving like a proper English person. She was not a native of England, so she felt detached from this country and its history. She could not relate with the quaint descriptions of England because life did not happen so politely where she lived in her “everyday life” (348).
