San Francisco Giants Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
The San Francisco Giants, a storied franchise that sparks many memories in baseball fans all over the nation, did not originate in the city of San Francisco. The franchise began in New York as the New York Giants, and in 1958, moved west to become the San Francisco Giants as we know them today. The move took place for a variety of reasons, accentuated by a declining attendance figure and thus, declining financial gain.
At the time of the move, the Giants were a solid team led by their star player Willie Mays, a future hall of famer that many fans today would have loved the opportunity to see play. However, attendance was still falling and with this as his prime reason, owner Horace Stoneham grew unhappy with the city of New York and decided to move the franchise. With several suitors making a bid, San Francisco proved the most worthy city to receive the club. Mayor George Christopher had already made public wishes to someday land a baseball team, so the city of San Francisco aggressively pursued the Giants when the opportunity presented itself.
