“The Horse Dealers Daughter” In “The Horse Dealers Daughter”, symbolism is used to portray the pursuit of happiness and love. This English (Great Britain) love story by D.H Lawrence has many images which contain hidden meaning. For instance, I believe that Mabel emerging from the water represents rebirth. Another example would be death. Though Mabel does not actually die, I believe that she is dead in other ways. She has experienced very little in her life. She has yet to find love, and a place in the world where she is more than just a backdrop to in everyone else’s lives. In my opinion the water represents rebirth because Mabel emerged with a new appreciation on life. Mabel was not just unconscious, she was dead. She had spent several minutes in the pond before Jack made it to the pond. There was also the time that it took for him to locate her body. When Jack brought her back to life “she was conscious in herself, but unconscious of her surroundings” (Section 119). This reminds me of a baby before being hit on the posterior by the doctor.
