John Donne Holy Sonnet 10 Tone Analysis Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

“Defeat the fear of Death and welcome the Death of fear." G. Gordon Liddy John Donne’s “Holy Sonnet 10” encourages the reader to do just that: overcome their fear of Death and thus welcome the end of fear. Donne gives numerous explanations throughout his sonnet that explain to us why he thinks we need not fear Death. His attitudes toward Death take on several tones throughout the piece. The most prevalent is his arrogance towards Death, in addition to his feeling of sympathy, and lastly his optimism towards Death. First and foremost, John Donne has a tone of utter arrogance towards Death. In quatrain one lines one to two, Donne writes, “Death be not proud, though some have called thee, mighty and dreadful, for thou art not so”. This demonstrates the author’s sentiment of superciliousness and superiority towards Death. In addition, Donne also states in quatrain one, line four, “Die not, poor Death, not yet canst thou kill me.” Here, he is essentially taunting Death and saying, “You can’t get me!” Even so, Donne also takes an attitude that Death is even to ......
