The Stranger: Can anyone be truly free? Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

One interpretation for the term “free” is enjoying personal independence not subject to the control of another. This definition gives the true answer for the question, “Can anyone be truly free?” The answer is no. With many higher powers governing an individual, it is nearly impossible for a person to experience true sovereignty. An individual’s or group of individuals’ conscience is usually influenced by powers such as religion, government, and family. The concept of not finding true freedom is easily demonstrated in the novel The Stranger by Albert Camus, where characters such as Meursault and the French Society never find freedom because of the higher powers influencing them. Meursault never achieves personal freedom because he is in many ways a stranger. His inability to connect with himself, life, and society made him the oddball in the novel. Meursault is portrayed as an amoral person where he is unable to distinguish between good and bad decisions. He does things because he does not feel it is wrong but in reality it is not good either.
