Ethanol The world we live in today depends mostly on fossil fuels for energy. What are people going to do when they are gone? I can tell you people are going to have to use different types of fuel sources. One that has gotten lots of attention lately is the use of Ethanol in gasoline. Ethanol is important to each and every one of us that drives to school, or anywhere for that matter. Ethanol is a grain based alcohol also known as ethyl alcohol. The chemical compound for ethanol is C2H6O. Ethanol is highly combustible. To some of you ethanol is just an alcohol, but the people over 21 we not only burn it in our cars but we also consume the same thing. Ethanol ups the octane of the gas. Upping the octane of gas makes it burn hotter and cleaner thus reducing emissions. Ethanol has been around almost since the beginning of man. In ancient pottery found in china, scientists found traces of alcohol. The first absolute ethanol was obtained by a scientist named Johann Tobias Lowitz in 1796.
