A Poison Tree by William Blake and Rice Pudding by A.A.Milne are the two poems that are going to be analysed. This analysis/comparison will discuss the similarities and differences of the subject matter, audience, purpose, voices, and poetic techniques, of the two poems. Finally after this, the most effective poem will be decided and the reasons given. A Poison Tree is a short poem that deals with anger, hatred and wrath. It is about someone who holds in their emotions of anger (‘I told it not, my wrath did grow’) until it grows into spite: ‘And it grew both day and night, till it bore an apple bright’. This spite and malice eventually overtakes the person, bringing him to kill the enemy or foe: ‘In the morning I glad to see, my foe outstretched beneath the tree’. The Rice Pudding on the other hand deals with completely different emotions such as frustration and irritation. It is about a young child who is having a tantrum: ‘What is the matter with Mary Jane’.
