Pierre Tagny English 112 Stereotyping in America Many racial groups some of whom are Africans, Jews and Mexicans, are stereotyped in todays society. Stereotyping and negative perceptions spread almost everywhere and in all aspects of our lives. As is with all stereotypes, people tend to make judgments about ones character and actions without accurate information. Since society sometimes forms false perceptions about individuals based on their ethnic groups, there are a number of negative impacts that this may have on the lives of individuals. One of the most prevalent examples of stereotyping of African Americans is the movies. African Americans are usually portrayed as being poor and violent. Since ones self-concept comes from social and environmental portrayals, young African American children who are exposed to more negative than positive images in the media or around them may develop a misleading sense of who they are.
