The Essence of America Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The art of American Literature is the ability of it to capture our national sets of values, principles and character. In other words, the American Literary works reveal our custom, our sets of beliefs during certain time period of our nation. From the Puritans through the Civil War era and down to present, American Literature expresses characters who don’t want to confirm with prevailing ideas and characters who rebel. It also presents characters who wants to achieve wealth and status. Sometimes it shows characters who are in denial. Nathaniel Hawthorne’s short story “The minister’s Black Veil” was a parable of sin and hypocrisy. His main character Parson Hooper, a Puritan Minister, showed up in the church one Sunday wearing a black veil over his face. Nothing else about him changed, but this veil frightened the worshipers.
