Spanish-American War
The Spanish-American War took place in 1898, and resulted in the US getting control over colonies that used to belong to Spain in the Caribbean and Pacific. The war killed at least 1,500 US troops, who were mostly killed by disease, and perhaps 10,000 Spanish soldiers and sailors. This became a good cause for humanity because the US intervention put end to other wars that could have been wore such as Cuban War of Independence.
The problems in Cuba combined in the 1890s which began the battle for readership between the American newspaper chains of Hearst and Pulitzer. They both used yellow journalism which is what our tabloids do nowadays. Hearst's style of "yellow journalism" was much more exaggerated than Pulitzer's, and he always used the power of his press to influence American opinion in favor of war. The Cuban civilian death toll was very high, and a real rebellion was being fought against Spanish rule... Hearst published amazing tales of violence which the "cruel Spanish" were inflicting on the "hapless Cubans".
