Four types of delusions Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

There are four main types of delusions: grandeur, persecution, reference and nihilism. Those suffering from one of these may be of the belief that they are a famous figure from the past or that they are being tracked by an organisation such as the FBI. They may also think that an object is sending out messages to them or that life is purposeless and nothing exists. Those that hallucinate suffer from false perceptions that affect their senses and cause them to hear, see, taste, touch or smell things that aren’t real. In the acute phases of schizophrenia, patients are likely to hear voices in their head that comment on their behaviour. Whilst this is obviously distressing for the individual it only becomes dangerous, to themselves or others, when the voice issues an instruction, known as a ‘command hallucination’. Distorted thinking can result in an individual thinking that all his/her thoughts are being broadcast so others can here them. Someone suffering from this would skip subjects mid sentence or jumble up sentences into what is referred to as a “Word Salad”. Those th......
