Shame Culture/ Guilt Culture and The Iliad “Honor, is the link between Altruistic heroism and egoistic. The warrior, finding that others approve him, approves himself. He is therefore driven to act, as others would approve. In Homeric Culture, the opposite of honor is shame, how you feel about yourself doesn’t matter, only how others view you. This is a virtue our heroes from The Iliad lived by. The avoidance of shame is the basis of what defines a shame culture. Guilt is something we as Americans are all too familiar with it defines our culture. America is steeped in guilt. In a guilt culture you are expected to feel degradation whether or not others know your wrongdoings or not.
