Receiving honor and maintaining ones honor, is the drive that compels the ancient Greek men to act in a way that we, in modern times, are unable to comprehend. In Homeric Culture, the opposite of honor is shame, how you feel about yourself doesnt matter, only how others view you. This is a virtue our heroes from The Iliad lived by. The avoidance of shame is the basis of what defines a shame culture.
Guilt is something we as Americans are all too familiar with it defines our culture. America is steeped in guilt. In a guilt culture you are expected to feel degradation whether or not others know your wrongdoings or not.
