The health workers and the Ministry of Health of Indonesia are going through an emotional roller coaster not only because of the epidemic avian flu but also starvation. They are trying hard to improve the quality of life of undernourished children across the country. Many children under five years old suffer from malnutrition and are underweight or stunted. Malnutrition, which is caused by lack of sufficient quantities of certain essential micronutrients, can be prevented. It is really shattering to see Mumun. Her eyes big and innocent, Mumun’s attention flits between the children playing among chickens in the dust outside her home, and her father. He holds her tightly. Now approaching her second birthday, little Mumun weighs only 6.5 kgs—the weight you might expect for a six-month old baby. She is just skin and bones. However, Mumun has regained the energy and vitality she was missing a month ago when she laid in bed at the local hospital. Mumun comes from a large family and is one of ten children.
