Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
In terms of psychological defining, PTSD is classified as an anxiety disorder previously diagnosed after an individuals experiencing of events outside of the normal range of human experience(DSM III-R, 1987). Unfortunately since then however, growing clinical experience has made it clear that a persons exposure to catastrophic happenings is an unwelcome but not an unusual part of human existence. In view of this, the subsequent DSM IV diagnosis (which is still used today) recognizes the definitive role of trauma in the triggering of PTSD, but does not place the same emphasis around extraordinary human suffering.
Sufferers of PTSD are said to have been through an intensely traumatic experience, which has directly caused feelings of extreme panic, grief, disgust or terror. Individuals will show great disparity in their reactions to detrimental events but a select group of events have been labelled as triggering; i.e. they have been accepted as the most common causes of PTSD symptomology throughout the population.
