Africans of New Spain
The presence of Africans and descendents of pure African blood is well recognized in New Spain, dating back to the time of the Spanish Conquest. Spaniards brought Africans, as slaves or otherwise free, on their initial journeys to Mexico and continued to arrive well into the seventeenth century. Cabeza de Vaca, in his account of his journeys through Mexico, mentions his guide and assistant, an Arabic-speaking slave named Estevanico (de Vaca, 1). Some were deliberate immigrants from Spain, Portugal or the Caribbean, but most arrived via the slave trade of the transatlantic. African slaves were essential in the economic structure of New Spain and were symbolic of the European legacy extended to the New World. They labored on sugar plantations, mines and textile fábricas (Deeds, 4). They were also a key player in domestic functions, acting as personal servants to large Spanish and upper-class households (204, Altman).
