Willy Loman: The Modern Day Tragic Hero Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Aristotle defined tragedy as "the imitation of an action that is serious and also, as having magnitude, complete in itself." It incorporates "incidents arousing pity and fear, wherewith to accomplish the catharsis of such emotions." These were some of the basic standards of tragedy that remained untouched from its establishment by the Ancient Greeks, through the Shakespearean period, then all the way to the modern era. However, Arthur Miller argued that the time for change had come for an augmented tragic hero that represented the common man. His intention for writing Death of a Salesman was to demonstrate that any person could experience tragedy. His character, Willy Loman, was a failing, egotistical salesman that has had his title of a tragic hero questioned because he lacks the contemporary foundation compared to classical tragic heroes, like Oedipus or Hamlet. Yet, Willy Loman embodies the spirit of a modern day tragic hero through his hopes to achieve noble stature through the American Dream, his tragic flaw that causes his delusions and problems, and his downfall not being whol......
