Kate Chopin and society in 1890s Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Kate Chopin was “never a feminist in the dictionary of the term, that is, she never joined or supported any organizations through which women fought to get political rights equal to those of men”(Seyersted). Chopin released ideas into the society in the late 19th century, which the society was not ready to hear. She was what is called a futurist. She had ideas, which reflected the future of the society. In the late 1890s, Kate Chopin, in The Awakening, “The Story of an Hour”, “The Storm”, “An Idle Fellow”, “Athenaise” and “Bayou Folk”, contradicted the traditional view of women and explores the struggle of women with society. Chopin releases new ideas about women through her writing. For example, Chopin discussed “strong-willed, independent heroines who cast a skeptical eye on the institution of marriage” (Hicks 1). Marriage was considered as a sacred institution. Divorce was rare in the 1890s and “if one was to occur, men were automatically given legal control of all property and children” (Hicks 5).
