Mind-Brain Identity vs. Functionalism The mind-brain identity theory suggests that whatever the mind and intelligence are, they can be fixed whilst not having to depend or relate with anything without physicality. Hence there can be reason in discussing the organization of the mind, excluding that of the brain. In contrast, a functionalist considers the defining feature of any sort of mental state is the set of causal relations it bears to bodily behavior, other mental states, and sensory stimulations from our environment. Arguments supporting the identity theory are: 1. Fits with the purely physical origins of individual humans. 2. Fits with the evolutionary origins of the human species. 3. Gives a simple explanation for the neural dependency of thought. 4. Fits with the success of neuroscience. These arguments all suggest neuroscience bearing success in this endeavor, and that of the continuing history of neuroscience itself.
