The “I have a dream …” speech by Martin Luther King, who was the spokesperson for black civil rights, was delivered to a crowd of 200,000 at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. on August 28, 1963. His speech turned out to be one of the greatest and most famous speeches ever given. I chose to study this text as it shows my selected theme of the treatment of minorities in literature. King started his speech by giving reference to the time when the Emancipation Proclamation was signed. The purpose of this document was to free the slaves and make all men equal, which gave the black man the “a great beacon light of hope to millions of negro slaves who had been seared in the flames of withering injustice.” The fact that King was standing in front of the Lincoln memorial when he delivered the speech emphasised the importance of this document as Abraham Lincoln wrote the Emancipation Proclamation. The fact that the blacks used to be slaves shows the treatment of minorities. Then King states the situation of the current time. The black man was free of slavery, but not of segr......
