Macabeth Imagery Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

William Shakespeare’s shortest and bloodiest tragedy, Macbeth, is the story of a brave Scottish general, who receives prophecies from a trio of witches, which predict his upcoming future. Shakespeare, known as the most influential writer in all of English literature, uses various images and themes to add to the realism of the story. An analysis of the most important image in the play, that of blood, unravels its significance and undergoes symbolic changes as it demonstrates character changes in the story of Macbeth. Shakespeare use of the word “blood” is significant to the play by developing the character of Macbeth and unfolding events important to the drama in the story line. The reoccurring symbolic meaning of blood changes from the beginning of the play to the end. Beginning with the very first scene, a battle between Scotland and Norway, the image of blood is introduced by a wounded captain who describes it in an agonizing manner. “Which smoked with bloody execution, /Like valor's minion carved out his passage;”(1.2.18-19).
