The Handmaids Tale is a dystopian novel. In this type of novel, the reader is confronted with a negative vision of a future society, whose characteristics are a result of several trends and affairs that were relevant at the time when the novel was written. A Handmaids Tale, written by Margaret Atwood, is an account of the near future, where pollution and radiation has rendered countless women sterile, and the birthrates of North America are dangerously declining. A puritan theocracy now controls the former United States called the Republic of Gilead and Handmaids are recruited to repopulate the state. This social order ultimately offers women more respect and safety than the old, pre-Gilead society offered them.
