Throughout history people have rejected others ideas and actions because of their differences. This rejection brought about many hate crimes within the United States. Two major lynching events were the Salem witch trials and racial lynching. During these events many innocent lives were taken. According to a historian, Between June and September of 1692, fourteen women and five men were hanged in Salem as witches, and one man was tortured to death (Shapiro, 64). Overall of the recorded lynching, between 1882 and 1968, 4,743 died (Zangrando). The underlying motives behind the witch-hunts and racial lynching were due to the fact that people fear what is seen as different to them and therefore feel the need to put a stop to it.
