Woman’s status was inferior to men’s throughout ancient civilizations, especially in Rome and Athens though the women in ancient Rome enjoyed more rights, freedom and a higher social status. Women were there to serve the family and produce legitimate children to continue the family name. Women in the ancient world remain an invisible part of history, throughout social status to political authority, women were subset to men. They were seen to be the bargaining tools that hold together the family, they bared and looked after the children and looked after the house and people that worked there. The women in Athens had a separated area in the house to the men, though in Rome they had the same living quarters and even ate with each other, much different than what was expected in Athens.
