Bridges appeal to the imagination.
By forging a bridge, a connection is created between two areas, where there would normally be virtually no contact. Most bridges make a jump across water, in which case the form, size and proportions of the object are determined mainly by the characteristics of the barrier which needs to be bridged. There are all sorts of divides which might be tackled: from small steams to canals, right up to broad thoroughfares, deep mountainous chasms and even enormous sea straits...
A bridge can be considered as a kind of crossing on separate levels for different types of routes. The bridge is principally built to facilitate a connection between two points, for the benefit of a human steam of travel. At the same time the bridge has to give way to another kind of route: the steam of water which needs to be able to pass through more or less unencumbered, and as such the bridge is also to be considered as a kind of gate.
