The Gestapo was founded in April of 1933 by Hermann Goring. The Gestapo headquarters was located in Berlin. The actual term Gestapo was supposedly created by a Berlin postal official who wanted a name that would fit on a regulation- sized postal rubber stamp. It was derived from Gorings Secret State police called (Geheime Staats Polizei). They chose seven letters from the full name. (Johnson 67)
Goring began using the Gestapo to silence Hitlers political opponents and to build his own personal power. Goring appointed Rudolf Dials as the first Chief of the Gestapo. Goring used Dials knowledge on how to operate the police force and learn information about top Nazi leaders to gain a position with the Nazi party. Another aspiring Nazi, Reichsfuhrer Heinrich Himmler, wanted to take control of the Gestapo and began a rivalry against Goring. They each tried to undermine each other to gain favor with Hitler.
