Charles Dikens Hard Times Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Charles Dickens In many of Dickens’ novels, he shows concern about social issues and particularly about how poverty and lack of education affected children. As a child, Dickens had known what it was like to be poor. His father was imprisoned for debt when he was a young boy and he was forced to survive on his own in London, the rest of his family having moved into the prison with his father. Although Dickens did not speak of these events, they gave him an insight into the difficulties facing the poor in Victorian society. ‘Hard Times’ was written in 1854 and centres on Dickens’ concerns that the ideas of the Utilitarians, people who thought that a thing was only of value if it was ‘useful’, were damaging to the imagination of children. In this novel, Dickens makes clear his feelings that a child’s home and family life are as important as forcing facts into their heads.
