Believe it or not, Rap has been around for over twenty-three years. In fact the first ever rap music to be pressed on vinyl was Rappers Delight, by the Sugarhill Gang in the late 1970s. Rap music is an element of a part of a larger culture that encompasses rap, emceeing, deejaying, dress, break-dancing, graffiti, and general lifestyle. This popular culture is normally referred to as Hip-Hop.
Hip-hop primarily began in New York during the summer of 1973. A young man named Clive Campbell, later known as Kool Herc, began Deejaying in parks in the south Bronx. Kool Herc came from Jamaica and brought with him the knowledge of the Jamaican sound system scene and the Jamaican toasting style. Jamaican sound systems were extra loud with booming bass and Toasting consisted of the disc jockeys talking over the music they played. (www.Jam2dis.com, 2nd page, 2nd paragraph)
