The Rise of Rap Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Believe it or not, Rap has been around for over twenty-three years. In fact the first ever rap music to be pressed on vinyl was “Rapper’s Delight,” by the Sugarhill Gang in the late 1970’s. (www.b-boys.com/hiphoptimeline.html, page 5) Since then Rap has evolved from a fad to a “street party.” Rap music is an element of a part of a larger culture that encompasses rap, emceeing, deejaying, dress, break-dancing, graffiti, and general lifestyle. This popular culture is normally referred to as Hip-Hop. Hip-hop primarily began in New York during the summer of 1973. A young man named Clive Campbell, later known as Kool Herc, began Deejaying in parks in the south Bronx. Kool Herc came from Jamaica and brought with him the knowledge of the Jamaican ‘sound system’ scene and the Jamaican ‘toasting’ style. Jamaican sound systems were extra loud with booming bass and Toasting consisted of the disc jockeys talking over the music they played.
